Homemade Hair Masks

Homemade Hair MasksEver since I reached my early teens, I have been giving my hair a hard time. If I wasn’t dying it some random colour to match my latest fad, I was running the crimpers through it. And don’t even mention the ‘Sun In’ I tortured my poor hair with (sorry hair).

Fast forward to today and I am much more aware of what I am putting in my hair. I’m also proactive at protecting it from any over use of my hair straighteners and more lately, straightening brush.

From heated appliances, to braving the chilly winter air, our hair is exposed to a lot of dangers that often leave it dull, brittle, and damaged. If we protect our skin by using sunblock or wearing clothes, how should we protect our hair?

The perfect solution: hair masks

You can of course buy some very effective hair masks which will work wonders on your hair, either as a preventive, or to repair damaged hair.

But what if I told you that you could easily make your own homemade hair mask with easy every day ingredients you can find in your kitchen? Or at least at your local supermarket?

Hair masks are one of the most effective ways to protect and preserve healthy hair. They provide a restorative and nourishing treatment that boost growth, repair damage, and protect hair from all kinds of “abuse” it suffers on a daily basis. And the best part? You can easily create one from the comforts of your home.

In this article, I’m going to share some of the best DIY homemade hair treatments.

They are easy to make, you know exactly what is in them, and they are usually cheaper than commercial ones. What’s not to love?

To use coconut oil as a hair mask is really simple.

WHAT YOU NEED
Coconut oil (unrefined/unprocessed)
Shower cap (if you are leaving it in over night)
2 bowls (unless melting in a microwave)
  1. You should only need a scoop (a heaped tbsp.) of coconut oil to run through your hair, but depending on the length and thickness of your hair, you may need slightly more or less than this.
  2. The coconut oil needs to be in liquid form and therefore needs to be melted. You can do this by either placing it in a bowl and then placing that bowl in a bowl of hot water. Make sure no water gets in with the coconut oil. The coconut oil will gradually begin to melt to a runnier liquid texture so that you can easily put it through your hair. You can also melt the oil in a microwave – just be super careful not to overheat it or you risk burning your scalp.
  3. You can add the coconut oil to either wet or dry hair. Massage it through making sure you get to the ends with it as this is where your hair will need more treatment. You might want to use a wide toothed comb or brush to ensure it gets distributed all over.
  4. Leave it in your hair for at least 1 hour. I  like to put it on and then get in the bath – it gives me a good excuse to have a super long soak! You can leave it in overnight for a real intense condition. Just make sure you use a shower cap to prevent the oil ruining your pillow!
  5. Once your time is up rinse all the oil out and shampoo well. Make sure you really get all the oil out! Also, be careful of the oil that washes out on your shower or bath base as it can be very slippery.
  6. Style as usual.

Banana & Honey Hair Mask

Banana honey and yoghurt hair maskBananas aren’t just for eating! Although they have numerous health benefits when consumed, they are also great for your hair when used externally!

Bananas help to make your hair feel softer and prevent split ends, so make sure to work it right through to the ends. The effects of a banana hair mask should be seen quite soon with added shine and less tangles. Bananas are also great for adding moisture to your hair – ideal if you use the straighteners on a regular basis.

Honey isn’t just for Winnie the Pooh – it also helps to soften hair and protect the scalp.  Honey seals moisture in to your hair follicles, keeping it well hydrated and shiny!

WHAT YOU NEED - (double this mixture if you have long/thick hair)
1 ripe banana
1 tbsp. of raw honey
100g natural yoghurt (optional)
Blender or food processor (optional)

  1. It is important to get rid of any lumps in the banana, so if you are able to blend it then that would be the best way to make this hair mask. Simply add the ripe banana and the tablespoon of raw honey into your blender and whizz until smooth. If you don’t have one use a fork to mash the banana and really work hard to get rid of any lumps.
  2. If you need to add some liquid to make the mask smoother, add 1 tablespoon of milk and blend/mash again.
  3. I prefer to make my hair wet before applying this mask as I find it easier to distribute through my hair, but you don’t have to. Apply the hair mask to your hair and work through to the ends. Make sure you really massage it into your scalp too.
  4. Pop a shower cap on and leave for at least 30 minutes, but don’t let the banana dry in your hair – that’s no fun to get out!
  5. Once your time is up, wash out the mask and shampoo and condition as usual.

Milk and Honey Hair Mask
